Women's Wrestling: Why It Deserves Respect

Women’s Wrestling and Why It Deserves Respect

Female athletes are becoming more common in the professional wrestling world but sadly, they don’t get the respect that they deserve. What is the cause of this? Some would say it’s because many view the women as just eye candy. Others just see their matches as just an excuse to take a bathroom break. But these women work hard to entertain the fans and deserve respect just like the men do.

So why else are women wrestlers discriminated? Some fans would say it’s because they think many of them are not highly skilled in wrestling. While this may be true in some cases, it’s not true in all of them and many times the women wrestlers are told to hold back on moves they do in the ring because they are not supposed to look better than the male wrestlers. This is definitely done in WWE as many former Divas have spoken out on that issue in the Division, including former WWE Divas Michelle McCool and Maria Kanellis.

Women’s wrestling should be respected because many of today’s female wrestlers are paving the way for the next generation of female professional wrestlers. With Impact Wrestling Knockouts Brooke Tessmacher, Tara, Gail Kim, Mickie James and Madison Rayne working hard to show women’s wrestling is a sport too, they are also paving the way for some of the newer Knockouts like Taeler Hendrix and The Blossom Twins to make a difference in both the company they work for and the sport of wrestling.

Ring of Honor is also trying to help women’s wrestling gain more respect. While they have a much smaller women’s roster including female wrestlers MsChif, Veda Scott and Mia Yim, one of their other female wrestlers, Maria Kanellis is a strong advocate for getting women’s wrestling more attention by supporting women’s wrestling promotions and praising female wrestlers in the business that are hard working and passionate about the sport.

There are also other wrestling promotions that are active about promoting female wrestlers to help these female athletes get more respect.

Pro Wrestling Eve- This promotion is a European women’s wrestling promotion that includes many talented female athletes including Kay Lee Ray, Jenny Sjodin, Shanna, April Davids, Carmel Jacob and Nikki Storm.

Shine Wrestling- Shine Wrestling is a women’s wrestling promotion based in Florida that showcases many talented female pro wrestlers including Amazing Kong, Ivelisse Velez, Angelina Love, Cherry Bomb, Reby Sky and Portia Perez.

Shimmer Wrestling- This women’s wrestling promotion, based in Illinois features many talented female professional wrestlers including Leva Bates, Rhia O’Reilly, Nicole Matthews, Shazza McKenzie, Ayako Hamada and Saraya Knight.
